ABOUT THIS PROGRAM

We're passionate about making humanities part of our daily lives.

National Trails Day promotes awareness of the benefits trails provide, while encouraging people to discover their local trails and instill excitement for nature. With this program, Delaware Humanities and Maryland Humanities intend to highlight ways the humanities can enrich our experience with the great outdoors.

Along the 5-mile stretch of trail between Chesapeake City and the South Lums Trail Head in Delaware, visitors will encounter markers with QR codes linked to literary passages to read, reflect, and discuss topics of nature, water and the local environment. This dedicated website was created to provide additional content to explore, such as historical photos, bird calls, podcasts and poems.

The Cardin-Castle Recreational Trail is a public path running along the beautiful Chesapeake and Delaware Canal.  The flat, paved trail is perfect for families, strollers, cyclists and hikers. The distance one way between South Lums Trail Head and Chesapeake City is approximately 5 miles.

WHO WE ARE

State Humanities Councils are passionate about making the humanities part of our daily lives. Our role is to inspire learning and promote dialogue about our heritage, culture, and future as Americans. While the humanities have the power to impact all of us collectively, the rewards of engaging with literature, history, philosophy, and social sciences are also deeply personal.

WHAT WE DO

At Maryland Humanities based in Baltimore, MD and Delaware Humanities in Wilmington, DE we strive to provide educational outreach, special projects, and funding opportunities to bring our communities together. We want our programs to help people embrace lifelong learning and exchange ideas openly. We connect cultural, educational, and civic institutions statewide to provide public events that enhance our understanding of who we are, where we’ve been, and where we are going as individuals, communities, and citizens of Maryland and Delaware.
